Day 1 of the 2022 World Juniors is finally here. After the tournament was canceled following three days of competition in December due to COVID, the tourney is back in August and the USA starts off with a matchup against Germany.
The United States enter the tournament as reigning champions. The Americans defeated Canada in the 2021 gold medal game to win the country its sixth World Juniors gold and have never won back-to-back World Juniors.
While the thought of a repeat is always there, only four players from that championship squad will be wearing the red, white and blue in Edmonton. USA head coach Nate Leamon stressed the importance of preparation with the guys they do have in order to succeed in 2022.
“I think it’s always out there, above your head and in the cloud,” Leaman said of a repeat as back-to-back champions. “But we didn’t win last year by talking about it every day. We won the gold medal by preparing and working and that’s kind of our focus right now. We’ll play well in the tournament if we prepare well for the tournament, and that’s entirely our focus.”
Germany finished sixth at the 2021 World Juniors, falling to Russia in the quarterfinals. That team had an exceptional top line of Tim Stützle, JJ Peterka and Florian Elias, but none will be in Edmonton for this go-around. Germany will rely on the likes of defensemen Luca Münzenberger, Maximilian Glötzl and forward Alexander Blank to lead the team.
